February 12, 2014.... A respected national organization called Remote Area Medical (RAM) has agreed to put Nevada on their schedule of international and American medical and dental expeditions. They can bring very large-scale clinics to both Northern and Southern Nevada. However, this will require considerable local effort and resources.  In order to reach the most people possible, RAM will offer medical/dental and vision events in Las Vegas on April 5 & 6th at Bonanza High School (6665 Del Rey Ave Las Vegas 89146).
Nevada volunteers and direct service providers are very much needed and welcomed especially dentists and hygienists. You can call the Anna Maria Deller at 702-716-6706 with local questions about the RAM event, but you must sign up through the RAM online site. Click on the "Volunteers" tab, fill out the form and create your own password. RAM will notify you with further information about volunteering in February 2014. http://www.ramusa.org/.

To understand what this event will look like, see this 60 Minutes special on Remote Area Medical (RAM): http://youtu.be/Dgef-OTmrWg

September 9, 2013... Important information for NDA Members

ACA employer notification requirements -- by October 1

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) amends the Fair Labor Standards Act creating a requirement that employers provide a notice to employees informing them of the existence of the newly formed Marketplaces under the ACA, along with information on how to contact the Marketplace to request assistance in purchasing coverage if the employees choose to do so. Specifically, by October 1, all employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (which includes all dental offices) will have to furnish each of their employees with a notice that informs the employees that there are new health insurance marketplace coverage options available. Department of Labor notices designed for this purpose are available for printing. One notice is for employers who offer a health plan to some or all employees (http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/pdf/FLSAwithplans.pdf) and the other is for employers who do not (http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/pdf/FLSAwithoutplans.pdf?)

2013 Laser Certification Course

September 20 & 21st, 2013

UNLV School of Dental Medicine

$895.00

PARTICIPATION COURSE IN LASER DENTISTRY - A STANDARD PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATION COURSE

Candidates who successfully complete this course and its prerequisites* will receive a Certificate of Standard Proficiency in Dental Lasers recognized by the Academy of Laser Dentistry, an international organization with more than 1200 members in over 25 countries.

Has the hoopla surrounding the introduction of lasers to dentistry been more smoke than substance?  Since 1990, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of SEVEN different wavelengths for dental use.  These different wavelengths create a world of difference in how the lasers operate, and their usefulness in the oral cavity.  The use of lasers for specific procedures found in everyday general practice will be highlighted.  The first day will detail laser use in the following subject matters:

1) Non-Surgical, Surgical and Regenerative Periodontal Therapy
2) Surgical and Restorative Implantology
3) Fixed and Removable Prosthetics
4) Oral Medicine/Oral Surgery/Oral Pathology
5) Pediatric and Adolescent Operative Dentistry
7) Endodontics
8) Pedodontics/Orthodontics
9) Esthetic/Cosmetic Dentistry
10) Practice Management/Marketing

The second day workshop will give each participant hands-on experience with the various wavelengths, performing surgical procedures on in-vitro models.  Real time videos of routine laser procedures will be part of the in-depth discussion of specific instrument settings and techniques for laser surgical procedures.

At the conclusion of the course, the participant will be familiar with the various wavelengths used in dentistry today, their effects on oral

tissues, and their uses for specific oral diseases and pathologies found in everyday practice.  They will be able to incorporate this knowledge into a basis for determining which laser wavelength is most appropriate for their practice, and be able to incorporate hard and soft tissue laser dentistry into their practices first thing tomorrow morning.

*Standard Proficiency Certification will be awarded upon successfully completing an online examination administered by the Academy of Laser Dentistry.  The candidate must own a laser or have access to a laser, and have taken a previous introductory laser course. The candidate must become a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. A free introductory course on lasers is available on the Academy of Laser Dentistry Website at:
www.laserdentistry.org/education/index.cfm
